DRINK BEER, DO GOOD
At The Sumner Post Office, we’re strong believers that every business should have a social mission at its core. Our mission is for our beer to make the world a better place.
Every month 5% of our beer revenues from our venue, is donated to a different New Zealand organisation. Not profits…… revenues, that’s approximately 30 to 50% of our venues profit – we give away to local organisations each and every month. No terms and conditions, no small print – we just put the money straight into the back pockets of important local organisations and charities across the South Island. Want to nominate your favourite charity or organisation? Get in touch at info@sumnerpostoffice.com, or better yet, drop in and see us!
This month in Christchurch
Christchurch Riding for the Disabled (CRDA) is a charity providing equine based therapy for people of all ages with a wide range of disabilities. Our programmes are led by qualified therapeutic riding coaches with the help of around 70 volunteers each week. Horses provide therapy in a way that is unique, effective and fun. We do not receive government funding, so the support of our community is essential for us to continue providing this service. Funds raised by Sumner Post Office will go towards purchasing a new therapy horse for our programme.
Our programmes
Therapy: focus on building physical strength, flexibility and fine motor skills. This helps build and maintain the physical capacity needed for independent movement in other areas of life. The movement of the horse causes the rider’s body to move in the same way it might if they were walking. This can assist people to develop and improve the physical capacity for independent movement
Education: for riders needing support with communication, fine motor skills, language, symbols and text. We work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to support individual education goals. This includes building resilience, self-confidence and the ability to relate to others. Working with horses also promotes empathy. Many riders whose school days are overwhelming, find riding helps them regulate their emotions.
Sport and Recreation: builds riding skills further. It allows people who are often left behind in mainstream activities to become expert in a sport and can lead to participation in Special Olympic competitions.
